Giovanni Battista Crespi, Christ and the Samaritan Woman
Christ and the Samaritan Woman

Beginning of the 16th century
Oil on panel
Toledo Cathedral

The episode pictured is in John 4, where Jesus speaks with a Samaritan woman about the "living water" that brings eternal life. In this "modern" take on the episode, the well and its galaxy of significations is sacrificed in order to picture the drama of Jesus' words, "thou hast had five husbands" and the woman's reply, "Sir, I perceive thou art a prophet."
